International Symposium on Surgery of the Spastic Upper Limb

June 4 – 6, 2024 – Mayo Clinic – Rochester, Minnesota – US

The Mayo Clinic International Symposium on Surgery of the Spastic Upper Limb, 

a comprehensive course designed for physiotherapists, rehabilitation specialists, and surgeons 

who treat adult and pediatric patients with a spastic upper limb.

The course revolves around a multidisciplinary approach to the procedural and surgical management of the spastic upper extremity utilizing didactic lectures reviewing current concepts, stimulating debates on controversial surgical techniques, all-access live surgery demonstrations with a master surgeon, and engaging case presentations.

A precourse is offered on June 4, 2024 to provide a thorough review of advanced surgical anatomy and hands-on dissection to learn and refine surgical techniques for the spastic upper extremity.

This United States based offering is a continuation from the International Symposium on Surgery of the Spastic Upper Limb held in Paris, France in 2017 under the direction of Dr.  Caroline Leclercq.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, residents, fellows, physician assistants, physical and occupational therapists interested in the procedural, surgical, and rehabilitative care of the spastic upper limb.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define the role of nonoperative management for the spastic upper limb.
  • Recognize the indications and principles of upper limb surgery for spasticity.
  • Apply muscle tendon lengthening procedures to reduce spasticity and correct upper limb deformities with soft tissue contractures.
  • Utilize peripheral nerve procedures to enhance function in the spastic upper limb.
